Fortune
The natural silence of a tree,
The motion of a mast on a fresh-tossing sea,
Now foam-inclined, now to the sun with dignity,
Or the stone brow of a mountain
Regarded from a town, or the curvet-fountain,
Or one street-stopped in wonder at the fountain,
Or a great cloud entering the room of the sky,
Napoleon of his century,
Heard come to knowing music consciously,
Such, not us, reflect and have their day,
We are but vapour of today
Unless love's chance fall on us and call us away
As the wind takes what it can
And blowing on the fortunate face, reveals the man.
